Why Did God Choose Israel?

This past Friday at the Bible Institute, we had the honor of hosting Avi Snyder, the European ambassador for the ministry Jews for Jesus, who gave a lecture on the topic: “Why Did God Choose Israel and What Is Its Role in the History of Salvation?”

Avi began by dispelling common misconceptions about the meaning of God’s choosing, and through biblical history — from Abraham onward — he showed that God chose Israel not because of their uniqueness, but because He loved all nations and wanted everyone to know Him.

He emphasized that Israel’s calling to be God’s witness is universal and permanently woven into the identity of the Jewish people. He reminded us that the first missionaries were Jews, and that the Apostle Paul, in every city he visited, first preached to the Jews, among whom he sought messengers to reach the Gentile nations. That calling, as Romans 11:29 says, “is irrevocable.”

The takeaway? If we want our nations to know Christ, proclaiming the gospel to the Jewish people is of vital importance.

Avi also pointed out that Jews who believe in Jesus as the Messiah, precisely because of the depth and weight of their history, bear a special responsibility, but also a great privilege, to bring a message of hope and life to places marked by suffering.
